Shape functions and power corrections to the event shapes ∗
We show that the leading power corrections to the event shape distributions can be resummed into nonperturbative shape functions that do not depend on the center-of-mass energy and measure the energy flow in the final state. In the case of the thrust variable, the distribution is given by the convolution of the perturbative spectrum with the shape function. Choosing the simplest ansatz for the ...
متن کاملPrecision jet substructure from boosted event shapes.
Jet substructure has emerged as a critical tool for LHC searches, but studies so far have relied heavily on shower Monte Carlo simulations, which formally approximate QCD at the leading-log level. We demonstrate that systematic higher-order QCD computations of jet substructure can be carried out by boosting global event shapes by a large momentum Q and accounting for effects due to finite jet s...
متن کاملOn power corrections to event shapes
Recent work on the theme of power corrections in perturbative QCD is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on event shapes in e+e− annihilation. The factorization of soft gluon effects is the main tool: it leads to resummation, and thus highlights the limitations of perturbation theory, pointing to nonperturbative corrections whose size can be estimated. Power corrections can be resummed into shap...
متن کاملPower Suppressed Corrections to Hadronic Event Shapes
For high energy processes (M ≫ ΛQCD) there are infrared safe hadronic shape variables that have a calculable perturbative expansion in αs(M ). However, nonperturbative power suppressed corrections to these variables are not well understood. We use the behavior of large orders of the perturbation expansion to gain insight into the nonperturbative corrections. Our results suggest that certain sha...
متن کاملPeak positions and shapes in neutron pair correlation functions from powders of highly anisotropic crystals
The effect of the powder average on the peak shapes and positions in neutron pair distribution functions of polycrystalline materials is examined. It is shown that for highly anisotropic crystals, the powder average leads to shifts in peak positions and to non-Gaussian peak shapes. The peak shifts can be as large as several percent of the lattice spacing. 61.12.Bt, 61.12.Ld, 63.20.-e Typeset us...
